Gel, dip, or classic polish — which manicure is right for you?

Gel, dip powder, and classic lacquer look similar in the chair but wear, remove, and suit your week very differently. A plain-language guide to choosing — and keeping your nails healthy.

Three of the most common questions at our front desk are about the same thing: gel, dip, or classic polish? They look similar in the chair, but they wear, remove, and suit different lifestyles in very different ways. Here is the plain-language version we would give you if you called and asked.

Classic polish — the flexible, low-commitment option

A classic pedicure or manicure finishes with regular lacquer. It is the most flexible choice: any colour, quick to change at home, and gentle on the natural nail because there is no curing or filing-back to remove it.

  • Best for: a specific event, trying a bold colour, or anyone who likes to change shades often.
  • Wears: roughly 5–7 days on fingers before chips show; longer on toes.
  • Removal: a simple wipe with remover — you can do it at home.

Gel — the glossy two-week finish

Gel polish is cured under a lamp, so it sets hard and keeps its shine far longer than classic lacquer. It is the go-to for people who want their nails to look fresh through a busy fortnight without touch-ups.

  • Best for: holidays, weddings, or anyone tired of mid-week chips.
  • Wears: about 2–3 weeks with minimal chipping.
  • Removal: needs a proper soak-off — please let us remove it rather than peeling, which takes a layer of natural nail with it.

Dip powder — durable strength for hard-working hands

Dip systems build a tinted powder coat that is thicker and more impact-resistant than gel. People who are rough on their hands — gardening, lifting, kids — often find dip lasts the longest.

  • Best for: maximum durability and a little added strength on thin or peeling nails.
  • Wears: 3–4 weeks for many clients.
  • Removal: soak-off, the same as gel — never pick it off.

How to choose in one sentence

If you change colours often, choose classic. If you want two-plus weeks of shine, choose gel. If you need the toughest, longest-wearing finish, choose dip.

A word on nail health

None of these damage your nails when they are applied and removed properly. The damage people blame on gel or dip almost always comes from peeling product off instead of soaking it off. Book a removal with us between sets, give your nails an occasional bare week if they feel thin, and they will stay healthy through years of colour.

Not sure which suits you? Ask your technician — they will look at your nails and your week and point you to the right one.
