Choosing which hair removal method is best for you is never an easy decision. Between waxing, shaving, depilatories, and any one of the dozens of other hair removal options out there, it can feel overwhelming to decide on one sure-fire method. Factor in concerns with pain and longevity, and sometimes it can seem like there are no good hair removal options available. That’s where sugaring comes in! Sugaring, a newly popular option, offers a method of hair removal that is noticeably less painful and more effective than others. Let’s break down some of the basics of sugaring:
What is sugaring anyway?
The process actually originates from an ancient Egyptian practice. Sugaring paste is made from a combination of lemon, sugar, and water, creating a sticky, gel-like substance that is 100% organic, natural, and devoid of chemicals and additives. The paste is applied to areas with unwanted hair and then swiftly removed in the direction of hair growth—no waxing strips or cloths required!
How is it applied and removed?
The desired area is first cleansed, and then a thin layer of powder is applied, creating a slight distance between the skin and the sugaring paste. The paste is then applied while still warm, and after a few moments it is easily “flicked” off in the direction of hair growth, taking with it all of your unwanted hair.
How does it work? Unlike waxing, sugaring does not break the surface of your skin to attack hair. Instead, it removes hair straight from the root, forcing your body to grow a whole new root before it can sprout unwanted hair again. The best part? Removing the root this way actually weakens the hair follicle over time, meaning the more you partake in sugaring, the less hair you will actually grow back in the long run. Even the hair that does grow back will prove to be finer and sparser than before!
What happens after?
For twenty-four hours after sugaring, it is important to avoid areas with high heat (e.g. hot tubs, saunas, tubs), as well as exfoliation, as your skin will be extremely sensitive and more prone to attracting bacteria. After twenty-four hours, it is essential to exfoliate every day to prevent ingrown hairs, as well as to keep the skin moisturized to avoid inflammation. Salicylic acid, vitamin E, and aloe are all great options to use to keep your smooth skin looking healthy during this time.
How long does it last?
With proper maintenance, sugaring can keep your skin smooth and hairless for four to six weeks. It is important to remember that sugaring only works if you have at least one-eight or one-quarter of an inch of hair visible on the skin, so between appointments you will need to grow out some unwanted hair, if only a little.
What are the benefits?
Overall, sugaring is a less painful method of hair removal compared to others, as it does not break open the skin to attack unwanted hair. It is also quicker, as the paste does not have to set for very long after being applied and no waxing strips are required to remove it. Further, frequent sugaring can result in less and thinner hair growth in the long run, and because the ingredients are all organic, you can feel good about what’s being applied to your skin to make it look so smooth and desirable!
