Did you know that acrylic nails were invented by a dentist? Strange but true! (Seriously, we can’t make this stuff up.)
Although artificial nails have been around for thousands of years, it wasn’t until the 1950’s that acrylic nails were invented.
In 1957, Dr. Robert Slack broke a fingernail in his office, and experimented with various chemicals and materials, to come up with a suitable covering for his broken nail. This would pave the way for
Ancient Egyptians
As far back as 5000 BC, Egyptian women used artificial nails as a way to showcase their wealth and status. Popular items used include nut shells, gold, ivory and bone. Their nails were exceptionally long, because they didn’t have to worry about manual labor like their peasant counterparts.
Peasants were banned from wearing the colour red on their nails; that was strictly reserved for royalty. Queen Nefertiti was known for her ruby red fingernails and toenails, achieved from a mixture of henna dye, and in some instances, blood (ewww).
